Descriptions of plants:
Kiwi - (Actinidia) Kiwi is a deciduous vining plant
that can trail up to 30' if not pruned. The fruit occurs on the female but the
male can pollinate the female up to a ratio of 6 to 1. Fuzzy fruit with a
green inside is harvested in the fall. Fruit is borne on wood that is year old
or older. During the winter, cut out wood that has fruited for 3 years and cut
back younger shoots leaving about 3 to 7 buds beyond the previous summer's fruit
- kind of similar to the way a cane-type grape is pruned. Does well in zones
4-9, 12-24. (Crop Failure - not available in quarts this
Kiwi - Can take temperatures to -30 F. Deciduous and similar to the regular Kiwi
except that the fruit is not fuzzy and is the size of a very large grape. It can
be eaten skin and all. Issai is a self fruitful variety that needs no special
pollinator. Does well in zones 1-10, 12, 14-24.
Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) is a deciduous bush that
to 8' tall in full sun although shade in the late afternoon in hot summer areas
is sometimes recommended. Goji should be hardy to -10 F. It is not picky about soil or the pH of the soil. Goji
Berry is in the same family as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers. Birds
may eat the fruit so treat it like you would a blueberry. It is native to the
Himalayan Mountains of Tibet and Mongolia although it has been grown in China
for thousands of years.
Goji berries contain all the essential amino acids
and has one of the highest concentration of protein in a fruit. It is loaded
with vitamin C too. It is a nutritional powerhouse with minerals and is
also high in fiber. This fruit is an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and has
anti-fungal compounds. The powerful antioxidant properties and polysaccharides
help to boost the immune system.
The fruit can be eaten fresh but is most often eaten
dried. Please note that there can be adverse interactions if you consume Goji
berries while also taking medication for diabetes, or blood pressure, or take
the blood thinner warfarin. So be sure to consult your health care provider if
that is the case.
Beauty Semi-Dwf Mulberry - Large, black fruit with sweet, flavorful flesh
that resembles a blackberry but with more flavor. The fruit can stain however.
Wear gloves when picking the fruit. Related to the Persian Mulberry but this
semi-dwarf variety grows to about 8 -12' but can be trained as a bush under
5'. Deciduous. Heat and drought tolerant but fruits better with regular water.
Hardy in Zones 4-24.
